The best angle for solar panels in the UK depends on location, roof layout and the objective of the system. A south-facing tilted array often suits high annual yield, but there is no single angle that is best for every Scottish property.
Angle and direction are separate
Tilt is the panel’s angle above horizontal. Orientation is the compass direction it faces. Both affect when sunlight reaches the panel. Local shading and seasonal sun paths can outweigh a small difference in roof pitch.
Can east- or west-facing roofs work?
Yes, they can provide useful generation. An east-west layout may spread output into morning and afternoon, which can suit household demand. Compare predicted annual energy and the timing of output rather than rejecting a roof because it is not due south.
Should an existing roof be altered?
Usually the practical comparison starts with a mounting system appropriate to the roof as it stands. Changing geometry adds structural, wind and cost considerations. Ask whether the predicted extra energy justifies additional complexity.
What about flat roofs?
Flat-roof designs balance tilt with row spacing, shade between panels, wind loading, drainage and access. South-facing and east-west arrangements can both be appropriate. Ballast or fixings need assessment for the specific structure.
How does Scotland change the calculation?
Latitude, horizon and local weather affect the generation forecast. Winter sun is lower and daylight is shorter. A generic UK percentage-loss table cannot replace modelling for the address and roof.
